Tips & Tricks: Capturing the Essence of Wildlife

For wildlife photographers, when things do happen, they tend to happen very suddenly, so you need to be able to rattle off as many shots as possible at a millisecond's notice. Here are some tips from Jonathan and Angela Scott, who are professional wildlife photographers.

1) Shoot while the engine's still running: The animal might run off the minute the engine falls silent causing you to miss the shot. So squeeze off a couple of images just as you pull up.

2) Keep your kit bag basic: Buy two camera bodies. Have a telephoto lens on one and a wide-angle or medium-telephoto lens on another. You won’t have to change lenses, or risk getting dust on the sensor, which is a huge problem on safari.

3) Tracking mode: For action shots, set your camera to tracking mode. Using predictive focusing (AI Servo), the camera determines how fast the subject is moving, and then predicts where the subject will be and adjusts focus accordingly.

4) Learn the settings on your camera: For action shots of big cats, you need as fast a shutter speed as possible - a minimum of 1/500sec but as high as 1/2000sec if your camera will shoot that fast.

Don't shoot on empty

5) Don't shoot on empty: We recommend shooting on high capacity memory cards, especially when on safari. You'll take more pictures than you think, often in burst mode, and you won't be able to download your shots as often as at home.
